OpenAI is dressing up shared usage limits as an upgrade. How very Orwellian.
I've been reading OpenAI's announcement about the upcoming Chat and Work merger, and I'm genuinely baffled by how they're selling this to paying subscribers.
One unified experience! Seamless transitions! Everything in one place! Lovely.
Except there's a rather important catch.
Starting in December, OpenAI plans to introduce shared token-based usage limits across ChatGPT and Codex for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers.
Right now, you can exhaust your Work allowance on a demanding project and still use your separate advanced Chat allowance for research, reasoning, brainstorming, whatever. Under the new system, all of that could end up competing for the same pool of tokens.
So one big project could leave you with considerably less capacity for your usual conversations. Instant Chat is exempt, apparently. Great. Except people aren't exactly paying for Plus and Pro because they particularly enjoy using Instant.
And somehow we're supposed to celebrate this as an improvement? Am I missing something here?
What pisses me off is that merging two interfaces doesn't require merging their usage limits. Those are two entirely separate decisions. Yet OpenAI is selling us the convenience while barely addressing what subscribers could potentially lose. Like, if the enshittification is coming, at least be honest about it!!
Then there's this wonderful reassurance from OpenAI:
"We expect most users won't need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now."
Sorry, based on what? We haven't even seen the actual allowances!
And if we do run out, the documentation helpfully suggests waiting, upgrading or buying additional credits. So funny how that works! Got a problem? Open up your wallet that bit wider.
Now, I can't say for sure whether OpenAI deliberately designed this to squeeze more money out of subscribers. The new allowances might turn out to be perfectly reasonable.
But this is starting to look awfully familiar. Build a loyal paying customer base, gradually change what people get for their money, and wrap everything in lovely corporate language about improving the experience.
